The Waikato Times UNKNOWN SATURDAY, JULY 13, 1872.

Till', telegrams wo publish in another column tell of angry wor Is having passed between the Governments of Great P>ritam and America. Judging from t he expression of opinion which hits t,nken place in Parliament, the English people are thoroughly disgusted at the mean ail vantage which-America has attempted to take of n mistake on the part of the diplomatists who were appointed to represent I'lnglantl at the Commission which sat in America to consider the justice of the claims urged bv that country on accountot the losses entailed by the escape of the Alabama from J liverpool. .England has so often sacrificed her dignity on the altar ot relationship, that a certain section ot the American people has been almost trained to the belief that they eeuld insult her flag with impunity. The last Mage of "bounce"' had been reached by the American Government when they threatened to go to war. The calm- reply of England that t>he was "ready," if necessary, to adopr. this means of settling the question will, without dor.bf, have the desired effect of ending the dispute. There is net, and never has been, any desire on the part of the great majority of the American people to press the unreasonable claims urged by their Government. KOAJD FliOM WAKATO TO W LLLISGICN Thk following petition has been sent to us we presume in order that wo may obtain sig natures: — ''The humble petition of the- undersigned inhabitants of the Proviuce of Auckland, in the Color j ofjNtw Zealand, sheweth : " 1. That the ..establishment of complete communication by coach between Auckland,

Taupo, and Wellington, would at tbe presc nt time conduce greatly to the security and commercial prosperity of tbe colony. if 2. That the making of such a road would be tbe means of opening up communication witb the Tnhua country, where, probably at no distant date, a large and important goldfield may be established. "13 That your petitioners are assured that no objection to such line ot road would be made by the native ownei-s-of the land through which it would pass. "4. That the whole distance from Cambridge to Taupo would not much exceed one hundred miles, and that the general nature of the country is of such a character as to present no engineering difficulties of any moment. I'urther, that coach communication between Auckland and Cambridge, and Napier and Taupo, is already complete,, and thus a considerable portion of the road between Auckland and Wellington is even now available for traffic. Your petitioners therefor s respectfully request that may be taken with as little delay as possible to complete the line of road above referred toi And your petitioners will ever pray, <fcc." The above suggests one or' the most useful works that could possibly be undertaken in the North Island. It would have the effect of opening up the country, to which the natives when in rebellion have been in the habit of retiring. Taupo will eventually become a fashionable watering-place, and unless steps are taken to complete the road from Cambridge, all the traffic will pass by Napier or Tauranga. It is of great importance that easy communication should be opened up with llawke's Bay, as it is to that province that the Waikato settlers will have to look for stock.. We strongly urge oil every settler in the district the advisability of signing the petition. We are not aware who are the movers In the matter, but we may suggest to them that they send copies of petition to each settlement in the Waikato;
