Soon after the arrival of the Defence Minister on Saturday last, a deputation of the School Committee waited upon him and asked that a portion (nve hot 102, Stockade Re3erye (ten acres); miglit be granted for school; purpose*. The deputation, pointed out the present atate and. position of the school building, that it iras quite inadequate: to th» requireaients of the district, and also fchj>l&fehce Minister that the Central Board of Education had offered a grant of money to assist in erecting a school-house on condition the school committee provided a suitable site. The Hon. Mr. McLean requested that a sketch of the allotment might be sent into him and promised to further the object the committee had iu view to the best of his ability. This morning, Monday, May 27, a deputation, consisting of Oapt. Steele, Messrs. Highley, Edgecumbe, and Morris waited on the Defence Minister requesting that a site might- be-granted en which to erect the proposed town hall. The Defence Minister pointed out that when grants were made certain restrictions' were always attached, and suggested to the deputation that it would be tetter for them to 3elect a peice of land suitable for the purpose and that he would see it was put up at auction at once I learn that the committee appointed have chosen a site between Victoria ami Queen-streets. I may here atate that it is proposed to form a joint stock company, to erect the building,-and from the interest taken in the matter by our leading settlers 1 have no doubt it will be a successful undertaking. Tho contractor for making the new road to the Wharf has this day commenced work with his usual energy. It will be a great improvement to the township when finished ; the business people at the wharf will find it a great convenience and should be very thankful to the Board for having set afloat this work at so unseasonable a time of the year.
