Tho delay in the arrival of the mail has bi>tm owing to the old " double-eudor" Mohong-a having beon put on from San Francisco to Honolulu. Sho sailed from tho former port ou the 29th March, cracked hor steam-chest, and put bade for repairs. She sailed again ou tho b'th April, and arrived at Honolulu ou tho 17th.
London, April 20th A Hongkong telegram says that- tlio Fronch steamer Avafco collided with the steamer Lioua off the Chinese coast. The Hona sunk with 60 persons on. board, all of whom are missing , and bolieved to be drowned.
I April 23rd. J At Epsom Races, which opened to-day, tho City and Suburban Handicap race was won by " Dig-by Grand." " Lord Glasgow" was J second, and "Hector" third. There was a long- and acrimonious debate ! in the House of Commons this evening on tho i course the Government had pursued with ! regard to the Dublin University Test Bill. Dr. Play fit (Liberal), member for I Edinburgh Universities, seconded Fawcett'a I motion and expressed regret at tho dangerous I course of the Government as involving- a Ministerial crisis on an insignificant question. j Bouverie, member for Kilmarnock, also j Liberal, supported the motion, and reminded the Government that tho confidence of the House was shaken. Ho quoted from tho " Daily News," announcing by way of threat thai, the Government intended to make tho Bill a tost question. He said it was scandalI ous that such information should first reach the House through the columns of a newspaper, and asked Gladstone if the writer was a member of the Cabinet, and, if so, who he was. Mr. Gladstone replied, complaining of the strange inaccuracies of the speakers. He admitted that Government was pledged to take up the subject of education in Ireland, which pledge was unfulfilled solely for , want of time. He denied responsibility for the news item or knowledge of the author. He said that it wan impossible to appoint a day for the consideration of the Bill lie could not d<9 that, even for a Government measure. Fawcett pronounced the answer of the Government as unsatisfatcory. He closed the discussion by withdrawing his motion. Tho House went into Committee on the Ballot Bill. Several amendments proposed by the Government were adopted by large majorities. A thunderstorm of unusual violence pussed over the Midland Counties this morning-, doing great damage. Houses were unroofed, churches injured, and some lives are reported lost.
In the House of Lords to-night the Bill, the object of which is to pay Catholic chaplins for services in prisons, after a sharp debate, passed to a second reading , by a voto of 58 to 22.
Dqblin, April 25th. The obsequies of Earl Mayo took place took place to-day. There was an imposingprocession of nearly a mile in length consisting of the principal officers of the Government, a large detachment of regulars and many civic societies. The Marquis of Lome represented the Queen. The streets were crowded with spectators.
Redmond, Home Rule candidate, has been returned to Parliament for Wexford after a heated contest.
