ALEXANDRA.
(F.HOM OUR OWN CoKRKSI'OMIKNT.) j May 3rd, 1872. j The arrivallast evening of the pioneer newspaper j in the Waikato afforded'much satisfaction, and 1! feel confident that everyone here hopes that the j undertaking which has been so successfully inaugur- i atetl will increase and prosjjer. j Your readers will be happy to hear that the King j and Rewi have expressed a wish to meet the j Governor at Alexandra The natives seem to ' dsiplay more anxiety with reference to the approach- j ing meeting than . they have ever evinced on a j previous occasion of the kind. The general opinion j here is that we shall have free intercourse with I them in a short time. ; /' ' j Mr. McDonough, the Government Agent for ' Life Assurances, has been working -most energcti- j cally among us for the last few days, and has been j very successful. ■ '- • - , . ... j The settlers are beginning to find out the advantage of sending their "cattle and other stock by barge to Mercer, and I feel confident that very few cattle will in future be driven from here. (From a Correspondent.) We hailed the arrival of yoiir first number as one of the most important and progressive events that has transpired since the confiscation" of the Wakato territory. That the material and political interests of such a large number of colonists should have been so long without the-assistance and advocacy of a newspaper organ, has created much surprise here. It is a subject for great congratulation that the advent of your papier should be at a tinie when the wants and requirements of the Waikato, ; more than at any other, require the publicity and support that a newspaper can alone give them. I With regard to local matters this week, my ! budget must be limited. We were to have had a j concert here last Friday, but in consequence of the j inclemency of the weather it was postponed. j The Catholic Chapel, now in course of erection, is j rapidly approaching completion, and reflects great j credit upon the Committee of Management for the i neatness and simplicity of its design; and upon the i contractor for the expeditious manner in which he | has carried out the work. A number of the militia- I men who were absent from the last quarterly ! parade without leave have been fined five shillings. : I feel confident that the settlers in this part of i the"Waikato will afford^ your enterprise the support ; which it deserves, so long as your advocacy tends to promote the welfare and prosperity of the district
