ENTERTAINMENT AT HAMILTON.

An Entertainment took place at the Hamilton Hall, Hamilton, on Thursday evening last, 25th April, under the patronage of Lieut.-Colonel Lyon, the proceeds of which were devoted to the Hamilton Institute fund. The attendance proved how much these reunions are appreciated by all classes, and the pecuniary results must have been highly satisfactory to the promoters. Musically speaking we have seldom, if ever, been present at a more enjoyable entertainment, which was unusually successful, there being about 200 persons present. The soprano songs are certainly worthy of praise, more especially as the lady who sang them performed several pieces in addition to those originally al-

lotted her. The young lady who accompanied on the piano played her part most satisfactorily to the soloists and with great credit to her herself. Such

considerate pianoforte playing as we had the opportunity of hearing on this occasion is deserving the commendation of all true lovers of music. The alto part was sustained throughout the evening in a pleasing style, which was particularly noticeable in some of the duets. Several songs were given by gentlemen possessing really good voices, who, with an ordinary amount of care in training would become an acquisition to any musical community. We must not omit to mention that several choruses were sung by the full vocal force of the town, in which time and intonation were observed with great accuracy, and that a comic song was re-demanded in a manner which shewed unmistakeably that the audience were delighted with these performances. We commend the Institute committee for having inaugurated this means of obtaining funds in order to carry on their Institution, inasmuch as they attain a double object, not the least of which is the elevation and enlightenment of the people. Geographical.— If Europe, Asia, Africa, and America are the four quarters of globe, pray what is Australia? Oh! the hind quarter.
