SCIENCE TO THE RESCUE. One of life’s little worries— damage at the laundry—promises soon to be banished by. the scientist. This heartening news for the housewife is revealed in the report of the Scientific and Industrial Research Board, winch was published recently. An arrangement has been made by which certain manufacturers submit new fabrics before putting them on the market to the Launderers’ Research Association to obtain a certificate of “launderabilit-y. ” 1 .This will lead to the disappearance of materials which can’t stand the laundry process. Holes in collars, for instance, are due to certain finishing processes. in manufacture, and this is being remedied. The rapid wear of; double damask in laundry and along the line- of the fold may soon be . things of the past. The case of that prickly feeling in wool is being eliminated, by the wool researchers, and so hardly a Bide of life is untouched.

Indeed, it is claimed that more than £3,000,000 a year is saved for our homes and works by the board.

The building research experts have studied the most economical ways of warming a house, plasters, damp walls, painting, -and brick deterioration. Bricks have been made from shale and lime; enamelled cast iron baths are being improved. It is good news, too, that the frostbursting of water pipes is being investigated, and fire risks with hot lamps. are being reduced. Lancashire will be interested; in the new method of separating good cotton from, unwanted dust and foreign matter.

The wool experts have found a new process to make wool unshrinkable by tile treatment of wool fibres.

Better values and lower prices in shoe leather arc within sight, thanks to accelerated drying methods.
