NIGHTCAPS NOTES.

The schools have taken u,p again for-another year's work. The staff of the local, public schooi has been reduced owing to the lowered! attendance, the pupil teacher having been transferred to another appointment. The secondary schools have claimed two proficiency pupils from the town this year, both of these enrolling! at the High School. The annual excursion to Colac was largely attended, as in former years, over 700 taking tickets to the Bay. An express service"'was securedl fram the Railway Department, in conjunction with covered trucks, and the travelling conveniences were of the best.

The weather conditions are' good, and favourable to the ripening of corn. The occasional showers that have fallen during the season have .•'•cured for the farmers good croipe of winter turnips. The grass harvest has been good, and there should be plenty of hay for winter fodder. Altogether, the man on the land has had a good season, if the prices for produce had not been so low.

In the coal mining trade the miners are complaining of the small wages l.'Mng made under the new award. i.ti course, some mines are worse than others to hew coal in. In one mine the miners are reported to be making about 0/- to 13/- per day after deducting cost'of powder, which has gone up in price lately. Mr Thns. Dickson, late Bandmaster, has gone to Wellington with the Bth Battalion Band to the contest.

The evening delivery of mail over the eoniitor at the Tost Office ceasedon Saturday, 13th just., only box holders having the privilege of getting mail alter the arrival of the evening tram for the future. The Presbyterian. Ladies' Guild has held its opening meeting for the year, and arrangements have been made to carry on the work of the guild as usual.
