The weather was beautifully fine for the opening of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s summer meeting. ( In general with other Clube there was a falling off in the investments on the totalisator. Last year £92,000 were put through, while on Saturday the ■’.mount dropped to £77,000. The new electric machine was used for the first time, and, the greatest interest was taken in the working of it. The N.Z. Cup • wa« won by Royal Star, with Vagabond sec-ond, and Almoner third, in the fast time of 3min 25eec for the two miles. Tlic Stewards’ Handicap, G furlongs, was won by Solfanello, Absurdum second' and Rational third, in lmin llsec. The Welcome Stakes for 2-year-olds Vas annexed by the favourite,. Epitaph, with Farceur second and Veil third. The three placed horses were siredi by the imported horse Absurd.
