The bast way to asoertain whether coffee has been adulterated ia to pour cold water on it. If pure it will colour the water very slightly ; if mixed with chicory, the water will take a brownish hue.
To restore shabby - looking leather chairs to their pristine freshness, wipe them with a slightly damp cloth, and then rub dry. Beat the white of an egg to a stiff: froth, and rub into the leather with a soft cloth.
The washing of china and glaum dishes is more of an art than the average maid realises. They should be scraped not with a knife, as the general custom is, but with a piece of bread-orust, whioh removes the debris without scratching the dishes.
I you want to keep a house cool in extemely hot weather, open the outer door, or doors, and nail a coarse blanket well saturated with water above the doorway, so that it covers the opening. Let the inner doors be wide open so as to cause a draught, and as the air passes through the blanket the heated atmosphere becomes much tempered,
