THE ANTARCTIC SYNDICATES

We are glad to learn from London that commercial enterprise and scientific curiosity are about to unite with a view to the early exploration of the An tarctic regions. It appears that a syndicate has been formed in London the promoters of which are confident that not only is the blue whale to be found in Antarctic waters, but the very much more valuable “ right ” whale. They feel assured that if only the blue whale is found in sufficient quantity, this, together with seals that may be obtained, ' will be sufficient to render the enterprise a commercial success. Australia will necessarily form the basis of operations. It is proposed to send out two whaling steam vessels of 300 or 400 tons, and one or more of the smaller steamboat used by the Norwegian whale fishers. Mr Borchgaevink is to haye charge of a small scientific expedition which will bo taken out in the ships employed.
