D.J.O. AUTUMN MEETING. Tho Dunedin Autumn Races opened ou Wednesday last, when the weather was very threatening, one shower falling late in the afternoon. The attendance was verv large—probably larger than has ever been the case. The racing was more interesting than usual, and altogether G 3 different horses started during the day, the various events for the two days as follows: — Handicap Hurdle Race of 100 aovs.
Mr O’Brien’s Little Arthur, 11.2 ... M r Rutherford’s Abua, 12.10 Won by a head. Champagne Stakes of 250 sovs.

Cutts’ Oruchfield, 7.8 3 After two or three attempts, the field was despatched to a fair start. The colours of Crncbfield, Freedom and Assyrian Kingwere the first to figure prominently, and Crnchfield led past the stand, with Assyrian King upon his quarters, Prime Warden third, and Freedom, Occident, and Hilda, following in that order. At the seven furlong post, where Cruchfield was pulling very' hard, Assyrian King had his head in front, and a couple of furlongs further on Prime Warden moved up into second place, while Occident, Freedom and Hilda were running in the order named, each of them being handy. Assyrian King led round the home turn, but as they swept up the straight the six candidates were bunched will together, Piime Warden having command. The first favorite led past the stand into the last mile, followed in close order by Assyrian King Cruchfield, Occident, Hilda, and Freedom. At the windmill a forward movement was made on Hilda, and at the five furlong post Occident began to creep up, while Assyrian King cried a go, a furlong later Freedom joined the leaders, and at the homo turn Hilda was in trouble, Gallagher having the whip ou t to her, and Ousden followed suit on Prj m 0 Warden, who had been in command for several lengths. The lead was then left to Cruchfield, with whom Occident and Freedom joined issue, and for a few strides tlie three raced in company. When they were in the line for home, Freedom, disposed of the other two, and fram that point was not headed, although Occident resolutely raced him all the way up tho straight, Mr O’Brien’s colt winning by a length and a half. Cruchfield was two lengths away third ; Hilda a similar distance off, fourth ; Prime Warden, fifth ; and Assyrian King, beaten off, last. Time, 3min 57seo. There was £8221 on the totalisator, of which the investments on the winner represented £7Ol. Dividends: Inside, £1 7s 6d ; outside, £3 16s.

Stead’s b c Pallisor, 3yrs, 7.0 ... 3 A rattling finish ensued between Pique and Reprisal, the Auckland colt maintaining his position until the last few strides when, amid groat excitement and cheering, the Zetland spots were observed to forge a head, and Pique was landed a clever winner by a head Time, drain 29sec. Dividends, £39 13s and £33 3s.

Hilda was the quickest away, but Prime Warden soon took the lead with Bay Kin" Hilda, Occidot'o and Palliser in that order. At the 3 mile post tho field closed ~p n nd a slashing race up tho straight followed. Prime Warden had a slight lead, but whips were out, and Hilda crept tip on the inside, and was landed the winner by half a length, Occident U lengths behind Prime Warden third. Time —3mins Sllsecs, or half a second behind tho Forbury record. Dividend, £5 5s 6d. Gazelle won the Kovel Race, with Coinage and Irene next, and paid a dividend of £5. The Domain Han icap of lOOsovs. was annexed by Major George’s Reprisal, Inez Second, and Baby third. Stephenson’s Huguenot appropriated the Railw*ay of lOOsovs. from a field of seven, and Breadalbano won the Suburban Welter of 120sovs. The Post Stakes was won by Vaultress. The sum of £10,158 went through the machines.
