Of the prisoners received in the Colony during the year 1877, 510 males and 189 females were unable to read ; 262 males and 161 females were able to read only; 3,304males and 554 females were able to read and ■write • and 73 males and 1 female had received a fair education. Of the prisoners (excepting those for debt or lunacy) received during the year 96.78 per cent, belonged to four denominations. These denominations, with the number of prisoners belonging to each are herewith given Church of hng land, 2,087 ; Roman Catholics, 1,555; rresbyte’riaiis, 682 ; Wesleyans, 113.
