There are said to be 120 Good Templar lodges in the Colony, There are in Blenheim some ladies and gentlemen who devote a portion of their spare time to .perfecting themselves in singing, with the object of appearing before the public in musical entertainments. They are joined together in a society, and the body to which they belong does not play for personal gain, but allows the proceeds of the entertainments they give to be bestowed on worthy objects of charity or for other purposes equally praiseworthy. Some little time since the society gave a concert for the benefit of the Provincial Hospital, and as the Institution is supported entirely by Government, they could not give the proceeds to the support of the hospital, but they did better —they bought a number of books of history, travels, light literature, and reading suitable to divert the attention of the patients as much as possible from their bodily ailments. The number of books furnished to the Provincial Hospital by the instrumentality of the ladies and gentlemen connected with the Philharmonic Society in Blenheim is quite sufficient to form a small library, and men suffering from sickness or accidents will often think with gratitude of the persons who showed their benevolence in so thoughtful and practical a manner.
