HEAT WAVE
HYSTERIA AMONG GIRLS i 20 TREATED BY AMBULANCE SYDNEY, November 22. During the extreme heat to-day an outbreak of mass hysteria occurred among 80 factory giirls in a city underwear establishment. The girts were working quietly when suddenly one let go a .shrill scream and within a minute most of the others were fainting, screaming and rushing about in terror.
The situafii'on became worse when a man wearing an improvised mask and searching for a dead rat in the ceiling poked his head through a manhole preparatory to descending.
Ambulance workers arrived ataid applied first aid to at least 20 girls who 'had collapsed in various parts of the 'rooffi.
/The proprietor of the factolry described the affair the the stratagest in his exjp'erienee. The girls panicked unaccountably. He closed the factory for three hours and ordered all the girls into the fresh air.
