Council’s Monthly Meeting HELD LAST EVENING GENERAL MATTERS DISCUSSED The monthly meeting of the Waipukurau Borough Council was held last evening, the Mayor (Mr. I. W. N. Mackie) presiding over the following members: Crs. J. McCarthy (deputy- Mayor), R. W. Carpenter, J. L. Brathwaite, G. E. Grainger, and H. A. Martin. The clerk-engineer (Mr. H. B. Smart) was in attendance. Billiard-Saloon License. Application was received for a transfer of a billiard-saloon license from W. J. Boyer to P. J. O’Connor. • —Granted. Health Inspector. The Medical Officei* of Health advised that a conrtibution of £45 toward th? salary of the health inspector would provide for infectious disease work, inspection of food premises and licensed hotels, inspection of
nuisances, supervision of water supply, inpection of milk carts, etc. The amount was in strict proportion to that pa'd by other local bodies in the district. • Tie Department's offer was accepted, it being mentioned that no local men were eligible for the position. Assessor Appointed. The deputy Valuer-General wrote stating that as an Assessment Court might be required to hear objections to valuations in the borough, an assessor should be appointed by the Council. It was decided to call for applications for the position of assessor. Institute of Town Clerks. Advice was received that the annual meeting of the New Zealand Institute of Town Clerks w T as to be held at Christchurch on Wednesday, March 20. —Received. Hoswital Board.
Advice was received that the Council’s representative on the Hospital Board (Mr. B. G. Atkins) was due to retire prior to the next local body elections.—Received. Harbour Board. Advice was received that the Cuncil’s representative on the Harbour Board (Mr. R. McLean) was due to retire before the next municipal elections. —Received. Main Highways. Advice was received that members of the Main Highways Board proposed visiting Waipukurau on Friday, May 10, and "would be pleased to hear any representations the Council wished to make. The Mayor and the Town Clerk were appointed to represent the Borough at the conference. The tar-sealing of Racecourse Road and the new bridge approaches were mentioned as being Works to be discussed. Town Clock It was decided to accept the pro- ' posal offered by Mr S. E. Salter for the oiling and regulating of the town clock.
