ROYAL JUBILEE

New Zealand Celebrations PLANS ANNOUNCED — 4 PREMIER’S STATEMENT (Per Press Association) WELLINGTON, This Day. The Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes made public to-day a portion of the Government’s proposals for celebration in New Zealand of Their Majesties Silver Jubilee in May next. All churches are invited to hold thanksgiving services on May 12th. There is no objection to churches so desiring holding services on May 6 also, which day is to be a paid holiday for all Government employees, including casual labour, and those working under awards. Employees required by the nature of their employment to work that day must be compensated by an extra day’s pay or extra leave in lieu of pay.

During Jubilee Week the Government buildings in the four main centres will be illuminated* at night, and will fly bunting by day, and all such buildings in all main towns will fly flags of bunting.

On May 6 an official function will be held at Parliament Buildings, the gathering to be addressed by the Governor-General" and the ActingPrime Minister, and the Mayor of Wellington is to be invited to speak. Military reviews will be held in the four main centres. The Royal Salute will be fired at every saluting centre. A Jubilee gift is to be presented to His Majesty on behalf of the Government and people of New Zealand, probably in the nature of a Government subsidy assisted by public subscription to some deserving cause in the Dominion.

Arrangements are in train for marking the occasion by some fextra payment to unemployed. Educational authorities will be invited to declare May 6 a full holiday in all schools and to request teachers on some convenient day during the week to undertake some particular recognition of the event as part of the school curriculum. Local authorities will be invited to grant a holiday to their employees on May 6, and display bunting during the Jubilee week and organise suitable celebrations. Boy Scouts and organised young people generally are invited to arrange Dominion wide chain bonfires and the Broadcasting Board to feature suitable programmes. All sporting bodies are invited to hold special sporting events during the week.
