St. Patrick’s Day Banks and legal offices in Waipukurau were closed yesterday in honour of St. Patrick’s Day. Wellington’s Downpour. The Wellington rainfall for 24 Hours from 9 a.m. on Sunday was 231 points, 56 per cent of which fell in 10 minrutes just after 11 a.m. Twenty-seven points fell in two minutes. A Direct Radio A direct radio telegraph service between New Zealand and Tonga commences on the Ist proximo. From that date the charges for this service will be reduced to one shilling per, word. I D.H.S. Primary Students. A meeting of those interested in the promotion of a District High School ex-Students’ Association is to be held in the Primary School on Thursday night, at 7.30 o’clock. School Cricket On Saturday 'the Otane school cricket team journeyed to Waipawa and played a match against an eleven from the Waipawa primary school. Otane proved the winners, scoring 83 runs to Waipawa’s 59. Drake, Smith and MeLeary (Waipawa), Page, Arnott, Steven and Ashby (Otane) were the most successful batsmen. Page and Steven secured the bowling honours for Otane and Meta and Hercock for Waipawa. Lodge Social Evening Following upon the close of the usual quarterly meeting of the WaiLodge, of the N.Z. Order of Oddfellows, which had been presided over by Bro. M. Yarwood. as Noble Grand, a sooial evening was held. Very pleasing instrumental items were contributed by an orchestra consisting of Bro. L .P. Donnelly, and Messrs J. Bryce, A. Moore, and H. S. Cotterill, while Major G. R. Cowie, Bros. F. Sayliss F.S., U. Walker, and J. Pender and Mr P. Paye w'ere responsible for vocal numbers. Mr B. Jacobsen gave an exhibition, of ventriloquism, and Pro. A. H. Purcell, P.G., played concertina selections. St. Patrick’s Social and Dance
The St. Patrick ’s social and dance at Takapau last night was a great success, the Town Hall being well filled. The function handle.! by those respons’.ble for the organising efforts. The hall was most artistically decorated by Mrs W. T. Smith and brought forward many complimentary remarks. Les Anderson’s Orchestra supplied the music, ard Mr J. M. McKenna made a most efficient M.C. A most tasteful and sumptuous supper was provided and catered for by the ladies of the parish from Onga Onga, NoTsevzood. Ormondville, Makotuku, and Takapau. Mr Padbury, the hon. secretary, was most painstaking in carrying through' his duties in organising and provid ; ng fnr the pleasure and comfort of all.
Restoration of Salaries Reduction. At the 57th annual conference of the Hawke’s Bay District, Manchester Order of Oddfellows, held at Wairoa, it was decided on the motion of the outgoing district grand master (Bro. B. G. Nicolson), seconded by Bro. N.
McKay, that the reduction, of 5 per. cent, in the salaries of officials be reinstated, also that it be a recommendation to lodges to follow a similar course throughout the District. Bro. A. C. Holms P.D.G'.M. said that consistent with the views he had'always expressed on the economic aspect of wage and salary reduction, as seriously affecting spending power, he could not do otherwise than commend the proposition brought forward by members of the Management Committee. As an ex-secretary he also had full appreciation of the value of the services rendered, in some instances on a low scale of remuneration.
Harvest Festival.
The Harvest Festival celebrations of the Salvation Army which commenced on Saturday with a well organised Shop Day, was continued on. Sunday, when the Young Women’s Bible Class Singing Company, under the baton of Songster-Leader Cook, journeyed from Hastings for the day. As special officer for the day, Brigadier Cotterill led the three meetings, in which the girls rendered quite a number of items very creditably. Mrs. Adjutant Montgomery, also of Hastings, was another interesting speaker. On Monday night Brigadier Cotterill gave a very informative talk on the Peoples and Customs of South Africa, being drawn from his 16 years experience in that land. At the close of the evening the produce was disposed of, and thus was concluded a successful festival season.
