WAIPAWA FOOTBALL

UNITED CLUB’S MEETING ANNUAL REPORT The following report of the chairman will be presented at the annual meeting of the Waipawa United Football Club, to be held on Monday evening:—“ Together with the other delegates I attended the annual general meeting of the Central Hawke’s Bay sub-union at Waipukurau, when a remit from the club for more equitable representation on the sub-union was defeated. Two teams were entered in the sub-union competitions, senior and junior, and both teams were able to fulfil their obligations throughout the season. The following senior players secured representative honours and to them the club extends its congratulations: R. Rupuha, N. MacPherson, 8. Stephenson, J. Stevens, A. Collett, J. O’Halloran, Logan Tuki, J. Knobloch and G. Gurran. Several junior players were included in the junior representative team and to them too the club extends congratulations. “At the beginning of the season the club combined with the basketball and cricket clubs in conducting a dance, which resulted in a profit to this club of £2 17/7. Subscriptions came in, well considering the difficult times through which we are passing, but the club received no other financial support and the funds have been seriously depleted.

“At the commencement of the season Mr N. Verran, who has been appointed as senior selector, found that he would be unable to continue in that office, and Mr J. Fletcher was appointed to fill the vacancy. Towards the end of the season the club also lost the services of Xb H. Flynn, the secretary, who left for the South Island to take up a position. “In the junior team difficulty was experienced last season in the question of travelling expenses. A number of the players were unemployed, or employed on part-time work only, and the cost of travelling was a problem which was hard to overcome. The team was extremely fortunate in having the use of vehicles belonging to supporters of the team for most of their Away matches, but this means of transport does not appear to be available for the coming season, and if a junior team is to be successfully carried on, this is a matter which will have to he given consideration. "In conclusion I would 'il:e to extend the sincere thanks of thd flub to all those who assisted in any way during the past season, and particularly to the playing members. The members of the senior team, by continued effort, were able again to reach the final in their competition, being defeated by Takapau for the championship. The junior team, while not so successful, was, despite many difficulties, able to take the field for all its matches. I trust that the new season will see a revival of interest in local football, and that this club will be enabled to carry on with continued success.”
