DROWNING TRAGEDY
CAPSIZE OF FISHING BOAT CANTERBURY RESIDENTS (Per Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, March 17. Through the capsizing of a boat in which they were going to fish in the Hurunui river, near Domett, Dr Charles Hamilton Gould, aged 53, of 239 Hereford Street, Christchurch, and Mr Dampier Crossleigh, aged 33, of Parnassus, were drowned yesterday afternoon about 6 o’clock. There were four other men in the boat —Dr R. H. Baxter, Christchurch; Mr F. C. Brockett, of Masterton; Mr D. Erickson, of Parnassus, and Mr H. W. Lester, of Christchurch.
Mr Erickson was standing in the bow of the boat waiting to be put ashore. Through the boat lurching he was thrown into the water, and while the boat was circling round to pick him up the engine stopped and water was shipped. Mr Erickson swam to shore, and when he reached it he saw fhat. the boat had been upset and all Fh*e others in the water. Dr Baxter and Messrs Brockett and Lester reached shore and then saw Mr Dnmpier Crossleigh and Dr Gould in difficulties. Mr Lester went in again but could not reach the two men, and both disappeared. The bodies were recovered at 4 o’clock this morning.
