WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

THE WALLINGFORD BRANCH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS On Thursday afternoon in gloriou> summer weather some 100 members of the various women’s institutes ineluding many visitors, motored to the beautiful home (lent for the occasion) of Mr and Airs A. S. Wilder to celebrate the fourth anniversary of the Wallingford Women’s Institute, Airs R. P. Wilder, vice-president, and Airs G. L. Jamieson, secretary, welcomed the visitors, who included members of the Porangahau, Otane, Hatuma and Waipukuiau Institutes. Mrs R. Tod, president of the Southern Hawke’s Bay Federation and Airs Campbell, secretary, were also present. When all had assemb’ed ; n the billiard room the u-ua] routine business was dealt with, letters of apology being received from the president, Airs J. D. Ormond, who was absent through illness and from Mrs Judd. Mrs Ward, one of the institute’s original member < ,and who has never missed a meeting f or four years was presented with a bouquet made with sweets to represent a marigold.

The secretary then announced that a butterfly hunt had been arranged m the garden, which was a very kindly thought on the part of the Wallingford Institute, as their many guests spent ■ mos. delightful half hour wandering round and admiring the beautiful gardens, greeting friends and incidentally hunting for butterflies, even the hatidfon?e Australian parrot. p?-ched up on his special tree entered info the fun. The worthy representative of the AlcCtiw breed, extended a cordial greeting to the guests and o.t their departure called out: “Goodbye!” This compction was won by Miss Benven. The musical competition held indoors was won by Afrs Breed. A delicious afternoon tea was then dispensed and the ceremony of lighting the candles on the handsome birthday cake, which had been donated by Mis H. Parsons and iced by Afrs Ward took place. Mrs P. A. Riddle president of the Hatuma Institute, was asked to light the candles and~Mrs E. J. Turner, president of the Waipukuran Institute extinguished them. Afrs R. Tod (Otane) cut the cake, and before doing so thanked the members for conferring upon her such an honour. Then followed a most delightful and amusing play entitled “Mary’s Dismissal,’’ the vaFlous parts being ably taken by Afrs P. Canning as Miss Chester. her nieces. Miss Af. Wilson. Ethel, Afiss A. Wilder, Phyllis, AT'ss J. Parsons. Pamela, Afiss R. Hob-on, Winnie, and Afrs Whitehead. Mary. On behalf of the institute Afrs Byrne proposed a vote of thanks to Afrs Wilder for lending her beautiful home and grounds for the occasion .this being endorsed by Afrs Tod, Otan", and receive 4 with acclamation.

Birthday greetings were tendered from the Otane, Waipukurau, Hatuma. Porangahau. Pukefiou, and Herhertville Institutes, and the sing'ng of the National Anthem brought an aPomoon that was filled with pleasure to a close.
