PRIME MINISTER FINED
IN A MOCK COURT A VERY MODERATE IMPOST (Per Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, March 18. When “arrested” and hailed before a mock court at St. Andrew’s College, feto yesterday, th,c Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes, replied as follows to a charge concerning higher taxation and wage cuts: ‘‘l can only use in defence what Warren Hastings said. When I think of the opportunities I have had I am astonished at ray own moderation. I hope what I have done has sunk well and truly home.’’ Regarding a charge of imperilling the celibacy of old boys, he said: ”1 hope they will take the hint. They are required to do something for their country, and not remain bachelors too long. I might have done more and worse, and I throw myself on the mercy of the court.” A fine of two shillings, plus sixpence sales tax, was imposed.
