The Porangahau district members of the Returned Soldiers’ Association have arranged to hold a reunion in the Masonic Hall, Porangahau, on Wednesday night, when it is expected that there will bo a large and "representative gathering of returned soldiers from various parts of Central and Southern Hawke’s Bay. The Waipukurau Operatic Society is to hold its annual general meeting tomorrow (Friday) night in the Masonic Hall, at 8 o’clock, when the report and balance sheet will be submitted; officers elected; and the following notice of motion, for which Mr B. Atkins is responusible, considered: “That the Society’s next production be a Gilbert and Sullivan opera. ’ ’ Members and intending members are cordially invited to attend. Fine Alarm. The burning of a small shed on the outskirts of Waipawa was responsible for the calling out of the Fire Brigade. Members turned out promptly but engine choked and it had to be pushed for some distance before it started. Committee has achieved the £lOO mark in subscriptions for the of distress among unemployed families of this community. All the men registered as unemployed are required to stand down every fourth week and the allocation has been so arranged that each week between 50 and 6 0 men stand down. The men have no income of any description to supplement their meagre earnings on relief work, and it is to tide their families over this difficult period that the committee has undertaken the distribution of grocery rations, together with such other commodities as may be donated from time to thM 1 . “The generous response so far to the appeal for assistance is indicative of genuine public sympathy and the committee feels confident of its ability to carry on the weekly distribution of rations along the liberal lines of last week,” stated the secretary. Thanks to the work of the local Relief Committee and the Toe H movement, considerable assistance has been rendered in Waipukurau.
