SOCIAL SUCCESS

RETURNED SOLDIERS’ BALL ELSTHORPE FUNCTION A very successful ball, organised by the returned soldiers of Elsthorpe and Otane, was held in the Elsthorpe Hall on Friday evening. There was a very large crowd present including many visitors from Otane, Te Auto, Waipawa and surrounding districts, and in a short speech, Mr T. Colquhoun, on'behalf of the returned soldiers extended a hearty welcome to all, and hoped that everyone would have a very enjoyable time. Music was supplied by the Syncepators’ Orchestra, and a feature of the evening was the large number of oldtime dances which were introduced, and thoroughly enjoyed by all present. Extras were played by Mesdames T. Colquhoun, H. Cheer, Miss Smith and Mr A. O. Bell. The M.C.’s were Messrs T. Colquhoun, N. Nation, S. Erwin, and P Hayden, who kept things going with a swing from start to finish. Mr M. Ryan, on behalf of the settlers congratulated the soldiers on the success of their first ball, and expressed the hope that it would not be the last. An enjoyable supper was partaken of, and one of the jolliest functions held in the hall for some time was brought to a close by the singing of Auld Lang Syne and the National Anthem.
