Metal Suppliers for Borough
OFFER FROM WAIPAWA COUNTY
CHIPS FOR BITUMINISING W T ORK
The question of adequate and suitable supplies of metal is one that exercises the minds of 'members of most local bodies in the Dominion, and in this respect the Waipukurau Borough Council has its share of trouble. However, the position locally has been relieved, as at Monday night’s meeting of rhe Council a letter was received from the Waipawa County Council quoting for the supply of 540 cubic yards of metal chips delivered at Waipukurau at 14/- a cubic yard. It was stated by the Mayor (Mr R. McLean) that the chips were required for tar-sealing the main street. The price was reasonable, and an assurance had been received from the Public Works Department that, the chips as supplied by the Waipawa County were suitable in every respect for the work. The action of the Mayor in accepting the quotation was endorsed on the motion of Cr W. Hall, seconded by Cr W. Johnstone. In thanking the Council, the Mayor said that the first load of chips had arrived at Waipukurau that day. It was quite possible to obtain round river shingle at a cheaper cost, but expert advice on the matter showed that in bitumen
work round metal was not nearly so
satisfactory on a wearing surface. Continuing, the Mayor explained that the second course of bitumen would not be put down until March next, in order that the first coat could settle and the foundation consolidate. He hoped that if inequalities or weaknesses occurred on the surface after putting down the first coat, people would not condemn the Council’s system of road-making, because it was realised that inequalities were bound to occur. It was because of that contingency that the laying of the second bitumen course was being postponed until March next, when it was fully expected that an almost permanent wearing surface would be obtained.
