Women's Institute

ANNIVERSARY FUNCTION

YESTERDAY'S GATHERING The local Women’s Institute held a most successful gathering yesterday in the Masonic Hall, the occasion being their second anniversary. There was an attendance of between 80 and 90, and visitors were present from Otane, Waipawa, Te Aute, Argyle, and Tikokino. An apology for unavoidable absence, together with a donation to the Institute’s funds, was received from Lady Hunter, who extended hearty birthday greetings to the Institute. The president (Mrs T. H. Groome) occupied the chair, and the afternoon’s proceedings were made most enjoyable by the happy and very friendly spirit that was manifest throughout. A sumptuous afternoon tea was provided, a feature being the threetier birthday cake that had been made by several enthusiastic members and beautifully iced by Mrs J. Hobson. At the close of the afternoon’s programme, Mrs D. Campbell, on behalf of the visitors, returned thanks for the invitation to be present, and congratulated the Waipukurau members on their most successful anniversary. The secretary, Mrs H. Duckworth, senr., has received many congratulatory messages, tending to show the evident enjoyment that resulted from her efforts, together with the hard-working committee. A programme of musical and other items, together with competitions, etc., was given as under:—Pianoforte solo, Miss M. Fenton; competition (towns), won by Mrs F. V. Ward; song, Miss Hobson; musical parcels (game), won by Mrs Yanko; playette (“The Chrystal Gazer”), by Mrs A. Young as Madam La Sorciere, and Mrs B. Mathieson as Miss Bessie Blank; banjo solo, Mrs Mathieson (accompanist, Mrs Hindman); recitation, Mrs Walsh. The I programme was concluded by members indulging in old-time dances, followed by the national anthem.
