THE SECRETARY’S CANDIDA'L'UBE ALLIANCE QUESTION. (Per Press 2kssociation.) CHRISTCHURCH, Sunday, At a special general meeting of toe Canterbury section of the Post ant. Telegraph Officers’ Association to consider the question of agreeing to allow the general seciaary, Mr Combs, to stand for Parliament and the rescindng of a resolution to affiliate with the Alliance of Labour, Mr H. B. Ward presided over a small attendance. \ The chairman moved: “That this section, recognising Mr Combs’ wortn and ability, and bel k.ving that irrespective of party he would be an asset to Pari ament, extends to. him cordial good wishes for success at the forthcoming general election; (b) that Mr Combs ’ services as permanent secretary be retained m the meantime should he be unsuccssful in gaining polit.cul honours in December next; (c) that 112 days’ accumulated leave be gram cd Mr Combs as 'early as possible. The section is of opinion, however, that any such accumulation of leave is wholly undesirable and strongly urges the executive committee- to guard agains> any repetit on of same in future, (d) That this section, recognising that t*n. assocat.on consists of ajpprox‘..mal|ej < 8000 fmfmbbrs f'vffith ; widely differing views on matters pol tical and otherwise, is strongly adverse to the use c» the ‘Katipo’ for party propaganda and advise the' executive accordingly.” The motion was passed alter some discussion on clause (d), the opinion being expressed that tire- columns ot the “Katipo’’ had been used too mucn in the past for pol tical purposes.
The cha.rman moved: “That the executive take steps vo rescind the motion relat ye to the decision to affiliate wth the Alliance of Labour ”
As the meeting- had dwindled to less than a quorum the matter will have to be decided at a later date.
