MARAKEKE BRIDGE.
MATERIAL ORDERED FOR REBUILDING. A'S BRIDGE DANGEROUS AT PRESENT. ‘‘ On inspection of the . Marakeke bridge near the station on a request from your Council to have it screwed up I find the bridge to be- in a very bad condition and dangerous to traffic, therefore I cannot recommend any repairs as when repaired you would still have an Inferior bridge,’’ wrote Mr R. W. Bond, Engineer to the Waipawa County Council, to the Waipukurau County Council, on Saturday referring to a boundary bridge. “The bridge is 41 feet between p.ers, ” the letter continued. “I am instructed to advise you that a new bridge above the concrete piers will be most satisfactory and ; the Waipawa Council are prepared to find there portion of the cost. The proposal is for steel girders with hardwood deck and sides at a cost of £461 14s. The beams are not procurable in Australia and will have to be indented from Home ”
The Chairman (Mr Russell) reported that tho Engineer had approached him and was for closing the bridge straight away. However, it had been mod fled to allowing 30 cwt. over it. The Cnalrman had agreed to the ordering of the material and pledged the Waipukurau Council to pay As share as the matter was of the utmost urgency. Cr. Kibblewhite: Well that br.dge gives access to the railway. Something must be done. The- action of the. Chairman was confirmed.
