RELIEF OPERATIONS. New Yoek, May 2. Seven thousand tons of food was distributed free in San Francisco in ten days. The daily cost of relief is £30,000. Two hundred thousand persona still require relief. MAOEILANDEES SAFE, Wellington, May 3. "Mr Spreckles cabled from San Francisco to the Premier to-day as follows: — The following ask to be reported safe ; James Cross, Dunedin ; J. G- Bartholomew, Feilding ; J. M. Finlayson, Dunedin; W. G. Smith, Wellington ; M. J. Donovan, Auckland ; Mr and Mrs Dudley and child, Auckland ; H. Greenaway, Taranaki; Andrew Salmond, Nelson ; William Whitelaw Harris, Nelson. Mr Spreckles adds: “ I have a large list of applications for relief,” Advice was also received by the Premier to-day from Mr Smith, the New Zealand agent at San Francisco, to the following effect: —“No deaths of New Zealanders aro known. The British Consul’s cable of April 28th covers the situation. Addresses given now are useless. Dr Stinson, a Canadian, was drilled. The San Francisco people are doing splendid work. Send all subscriptions to them, not to the authorities. It will take weeks to trace the list- Will report later.”
