SUMMER MEETING. Second Day—Wednesday. office-bearers. President: Cape. G. D. Hamilton. VicePresident : Mr S. Bolton. Jud<*e: I Mr J. H. Monteith. Clerk of the Scales: !Mr H. 1) Buchanan. Handicapper: ;Mr J. E. Henry. Starter : H. Piper, I Timekeeper: Mr H. L. Jul!. Clerk of the Course: Mr G. Peebles. Stewards : Messrs J. Troup, O. Monckton, R, Smith, E. J. Gothard, A. Peebles, A. MoCormick, J. Leithead, J. I. N. I Mackie, and A. Yule. There was a great improvement in the weather for the second day's racing, but the attendance of the general public was again small, but this may be accounted for by the fact that the sky did not look any too bright in the morning. The course had been rolled, and was in excellent going order. The unfortunate mistake in the Ruahine Hack Handicap, in running the wrong distance, was the cause of a good deal of grumbling, and the Summer Handicap was started half an hour late in consequence. We trust the Stewards, after the experience of Wednesday, will cause large red discs to be erected at the various starting points, a want that has been severely felt by the patrons of the Club for a long time past. There were several exciting finishes and good dividends. We regret to say that the Club will lose a good deal of money over the meeting. The whole arrangements at the course again went like clock-work.,. Following are the result: Stewards' Hack Handicap, of 40 sovs.; seven furlongs. 51—Mr Bauer's Gold Cup, aged, 8.7 (Bauer) 1 58-Mr Rore's Hotu, 4yrs, 7.5 (Price) 2 25—Mr J. Cheer's Nukurau, 6yrs, 8.12 (JoDes) * ' ... 3 Also started—sl Lady Lome, 93 Esperanza, 23 Saltatorial, 18 Worry. A beautiful race. Esperanza and Hotu got the best of an even start. At the quarter mile post Worry joined Esperanza, and looked a decided winner on entering the straight. Here several horses put in a claim, but Worry led until opposite the saddling paddoek when Gold Cup, judiciously ridden, went to the front and won by half a length. Time, 1.33. Totalisator—29B—3o ; div., £8 18s. Second Hack Handicap Hurdles, of 45 sovs,; 1£ miles. 86—Mr A. Cowper's Ruby, syrs, 11.3 (J. Sweeney) 1 116—Mr J. Cameron's Portrose, aged, 9.0 (Delaney) 2 33—Mr Bevan's Voita, aged, 9.0 (Jenkins)... 8 Ruby and Fortrose raced neck and neck the whole journey, Volta being three or four chains in the rear. At the saddling paddock Ruby put on a spurt, and won by three lengths. Time, 2.59. Totalisator—23s—B6 ; div., £2 9s. Ruahine Hack Handicap, of 45 sovs.; one mile and a distance. 152—Mr J. Also started-28 Bush Rose, 14 Saltatorial, 13 Mystical. Mr Piper effected a beautiful start. Coming down the straight Gobo took the lead, with Bush Rose and Trask in close attendance. Gobo maintained the lead right round into the straight, and was challenged by Trask. These two came along together at a great pace, but Trask had the Natator—Germaine gelding at his mercy, and he won by a good length. Bush Rose, making a late effort, jumped from last position into fourth. < It was discovered that the race run was only a mile, instead of a milo andadisiauoe, and the stewards decided to run tl# race over again. In the second venture Bush Rose and Saltatorial did not start. Trask and Ejector led'.the field a whole round cf the course, when the horses bunched. Soon after the colors of Mystical was prominent, and he led the field into the' straight. All the riders were at work, and the result m$ in doubt until the post was reached, when Trask and Mystical could not be separated by the judge. Time, 2.2-|. Totalisator, 407. Strathbraan gave a lot of trouble it the post, and he ultimately pofc away, and went over half a mile before he was pulled up. When ast r. was effected, Strathbraan went to the front at a great pace, and led the trio past the post, The Onyx lving second. At the half mile post' the trio closed up on the leader, The>njx still second. Shortly afterwards The Miller cried a go, and The Oynx went op even with Strathbraan. The two entered the straight together. It was soon noticed that Strathbraan could not keep up with the game daughter of Wapiti— Spray, who won easily by a good length, Castashore two lengths behind the second horse. Time, 2,2.
