"A clover child," who seems to be smart at addition, draws the attention of the " Otago Daily Times" to the fact that, in the statoment furnished to the Dunedin Press of the approximate numbers of the population in the districts of Dunedin, Roslyn, Port Chalmers and shipping, Caversham, Taieri, Bruce, Dunstan, and Invercargill, as shown by the census taken on the Ist ult., there was a mistake of 1000 in one of the totals given — the increase of the population in the districts stated in the census, as compared with that of 187:1, being 8560, as shown by the detailed statement, whereas the total was set down at 9560. The tl Times" does not say, however, whether the detailed statement is correct or otherwise. In any case, the figures published at present are of course only approximate, but are so far authoritative as they were furnished, pre-
sumably as printed, by Mr Sperrey, the chief enumerator for 1 the Province. Our telegrams- of yesterday, it will be seen, state the total population of the Province to be 84,000, an increase of 15,000 in three years.
