THE HAWKE'S BAY TRADERS.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE INDEPENDENT. Sir, — I observe that after quoting, and, no doubt, verj' properly endorsing, Judge Richmond's strictures , on the falsification of accounts by Maney,- one of the publicans iv Hawke's Bay, you do that much abused class, the European traders there, the justice to cite his Honor's concluding remark, to the effect that "he did his best in other cases to detect any .similar tampering with the books, but could find nothing like it." The fact that yo» hava done so makes it evident that the statement, , in the earlier part of the article, to the effect that the case "casts discredit upon the honesty of the European traders of Hawke's Bay," was merely the result of inadvertence. What it does, obviously, is to cast discredit on the honesty of one European trader there, and to clear the rest.— l am, &c, W. W. 0.
