THE WILLIAM TAPSCOTT.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE INDEPENDENT. Sir, — If "Fairplay," who writes in your evening, contemporary last night regarding the inquiry on board the William Tapscott, had a grain of sense he would not have rushed into print. Being one who has taken some interest in this inquiry, I may say I never read a more absurd production in my life. He speaks of an inquiry now pending that lias been concluded ; of an attack upon Captain M 'ln tyre being uncalled for, while the so-called attack was based upon the ' ' Post" doing what the Independent is now accused of doing. He says that you take upon yourself to point out what the decision of the Consul ought to be. I only wish you had done so. Then probably the Consul would have exercised a wise discretion in following your advice. It seems to me that the writer of that letter must be some friend of Captain M 'ln tyre desirous of raising a dust to cloak his loose and unstable conduct in damaging tho chance of some one by publishing the evidence while the case was still going on. Probably the result of the the last performance but one. Several gentlemen amateurs have kindly promised their assistance on* Monday. The proinquiry will, show us who is the counsel of Captain Flynn. When I recollect the fact patent to everyone, that while the poor mate has been kept under guard, the captain has been at large, and apparently hand-in-glove with Captain M'lntyre, I think the inquiry is, to say the least of it, rather one-sided. — I am, &c, One who Knows.
