AN EXPLANATION.
TO THE EDITOR OP THE INDEPENDENT. Sir, — In. answer to the paragraph -which appears in the " Post" of this evening, j trust you will allow me space in your columns for explanation. The Mr Miller mentioned in the paragraph of the "■ Evening Post" was, I believe, a passenger by the Rangatira, and presented himself at my house on Sunday morning, about eight o'clock. About twelve o'clock (noon) he complained of being ill, and sent for a doctor, who shortly arrived and prescribed for him. One of his fellow-passengers called shortly after the doctor departed, and informed me that the said gentleman had twice attempted to jump overboard from the steamer during the passage from Napier. He (the passenger) then gave him his ..medicine and put him to bed, and returned during the evening and administered him more medicine, as ordered by the doctor. My son -visited his bedroom about twelve o'clock, and then found him, to all appearances, sound asleep and perfectly tranquil. Between one and two am. he jumped out of his bedroom window, and I immediately followed out of another window and brought him back to the house, and found a policeman and gave him in charge, who took him away ; but in about two hours afterwards the policeman returned and requested me to take him in again. This I declined, being of opinion that he was a dangerous person. However, I distinctly informed the policeman that I would gladly take him in again if a policeman were left in charge to look after him. This was declined, and hence the misunderstanding and false statements made by the " Post." The gentleman referred to (Mr Miller) had nothing whatever in the shape of spirituous liquors to drink whilst in my house. Yours, &c, W. Miller. Wellington, July 28, 1873.
