CITY COUNCIL.
The usual weekly meeting of the City Council was held yesterday afternoon at the Council Chamber. Present — Councillors Plimmer, Carpenter, Mills, Ramie, and Quin. His Worship the Mayor being absent, Councillor Plimmer was requested to take the chair. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. A petition was received from a great number of grocers and green-grocers, praying the Council to take steps to license the hawkers, they being the means of doing the petitioners a great injury. The matter was allowed to stand over until next meeting day. A letter was read from Mr J. Compton, complaining that a great quantity of oil was Btored in a building next his property, and asking if the Council would take some steps in the matter. The Engineer was instructed to make the- necessary enquiries. A petition was received from a number of residents in Taranaki street, asking the Council to form a certain part of that street ; also that they were prepared to subscribe the sum of £17 10s towards the work.^The Engineer was requested to make an estimate of the cost of the work mentioned, and to report to the Council next sitting day. A letter was read from a number of persons residing in the Tinakori Eoad and St. Mary street, calling the attention of the Council to . a to a very dangerous bridge close to Mr Williams'. Councillor Ramie remarked that the place spoken of was dangerous, andsuggested thata fence should be erected to prevent persons falling over the bridge. The Engineer thought he could widen that portion of the bridge, and also erect the fence. The matter was left in the hands of the Engineer. A letter was read from Mr Asher, asking permission to erect a verandah opposite his residence in Willis street for the Christmas holidays. After 1 some discussion, the. Clerk was requested to inform Mr Asher that they could not permit temporary verandahs to be erected in the city.' A letter was received from a number of persons living in Lewisville road, asking the Council if they would allow the prison gang, while on the Tinakori road, to put their street in repair. After a great deal of discussion the Clerk was instructed to call their attentiou to,several clauses of the Municipal Corporations-Act. A lettor was read from the Town Clerk of Dun« edin, in reference to the appointment of a fire inspector. The Clerk was instructed to answer the letter thanking him for his information. A letter from Mr Palmer, asking the Council if they would allow him to remove some earth from Thompson street. The Engineer was instructed to grant permission. Councillor Carpenter asked leave to postpone his motion in reference to the erection of a pound on ThorndoM, until next meeting day. Granted. In the absence of Councillor Moss, Councillor Carpenter moved that the motion standing in his name be postponed. The sum of*6lo was passed for part-olfloatract taken by Mi- Bender. Councillor Rninio drew the attention, of the Counoil to the state of Molesworth street. Ho was of opinion that this work should have been done Bomo time back. The Government, he thought, had given the grant on the understanding that Molesworth street should be put in good ©rder. He therefore moved that the work be carried out at once. Councillor Carpenter quite agreed with the remarks of Councillor Eainie, and thought the Council should lose no time in carrying oub the work. On being put to the Council, it waa agreed that the Engineer should undertake the work at once. I The Bank account was stated to be overdrawn £100 10s 4d j since last meeting £162 8a 8d had been paid. Councillor Quin requested the Clerk to prepare an estimate of the outstanding rates. Report to be brought up at the next meeting. Councillor Quin proposed that the sum of £7 bq placed on the estimates for the purpose of providing the prisoners with a Christmas dinner,. Councillor Carpenter suggested the arrangements should be left in the hands of Counoluor
Quin, he knowing moire about it than any other councillor. Agreed to. ;•:., •: Councillor Quin drew the attention of the Council to the danger of pipes lying on the streets,, and thought: .tthey should be moyed, before any injury was done. '■. \ :.-,,-_ Councillors Miller and Carpenter were of the same opinion. The Engineer was requested to look into thfr matter. This being the whole of the business, the Coun* oil adjourned.
