THE LATE REGATTA.
(to the editor of tiie independent.) ! Sir, — I have been greatly amazed and puzzled j by a letter on " The late Anniversary Regatta," which appeared in your columns this morning (Feb. 8). Tho wonderful kind of race therein ; ulluded to caused the amazement, and the wonderful words are tho puzzle. Your correspondent says "No written protest or objection has been given or made, as I understand, against the race to the Committee by the non-starting boat." As I know nothing of the boats or their crews, and did not witness the regatta, the mention of a race by a non-starting boat to a Committee may well bewilder a stranger like myself. How was it managed ? Why, " tho Hare and tho Tortoise" must haTe been nothing to it ! Now, as to the wonderful words. What in the name of all the dictionaries does " ahethesity" mean? Kudos, is thought to mean copper tokens, as it occurs twice after £s. d. One old salt who was several years in the Smyrna trade, says that he thinks an aleetliesity must be " some sort of a Greek mystico belikes," adding " they've a many queer rigs in them waters surely." Still, I don't feel quite sure that he is right. Can you throw any light on the matter, Mr Editor ? and oblige yours', &o, Aletheia.
