THE WAIRAKAPA ELECTION,

On Thursday night the Provincial Council passed a resolution expressing their disaproval of His Excellency's proclamation appointing a polling place in the City for the Wairarapa District. Wj will not enter into the question of their rig'ti to interfere in the matter, but we are clear!/ of opinion that they were entitled to express ;\-.\ opinion thereon. Apart from all questions ;i3 to who should or should not take action, or as to whether an appeal should bo made to the General Assembly, it is perfectly certain that the proclamation is both unfair aud uujust. The Wairarapa electors, resident in the district, feel it to be so and at a recent meeting held iv Greytown, they unmistakeably expressed that opinion. We are not aware that such a course has ever been adopted before in an election for the General Assembly, and that tho Ministry should have advised His Excellency to make such an innovation in the present instance, cannot be accounted for on grounds of public interest. That the act is unconstitutional is perfectly clear; that in this special case it is unfair, is equally certain; and when besides this a majority of the representatives of the settlers throughout the Province, aud the electors of the Wairarapa, have em- ' phatically expressed their condemnation of this proclamation, we think it would bo a wise and timely act to at once rescind it. Wo trust, though the notice of the nomination has already been given, that it will not be too lato to undo this wrong.
