Local Intelligence.

Tue Lancashire Relief Fund. — We understand that a meeting of Magistrates took place on Tuesday afternoon, at which it was decided to request the Superintendent to call a public meetiug at an early date. We truat that the harrowing picture drawn by the Times, Correspondent, and inserted in this journal a few isaues ago, will appeal to every heart. We feel sure that not only will the rich freely give from their abundance, but that those who have but little, will from that little not give grudgingly. We are glad to. see that the Odd Fellows are advertising a miscellaneous entertainment for Tuesday the 18tli inst., this we doubt not will be well supported. Customs Revenue. — As we understand some of readers were very doleful because of the de ficiencyin the Customs Revenue for the September Quarter being about i£rsoo, we take the opportunity of stating that in addition to the increase of £1800 last month the revenue for the past week was £1328, or an increase of £600 over the same week last year. Where the Customs revenue, for any short period, is liable to be comparatively very much increased by the short or long voyage of & single ship, it is absurd to base general conclusions on the largeness or smallness of any particular month. We trust therefore our doleful friends will become re-assured by the figures above given. • The Chief Marine Board. — The appointments are now gazetted ; they consist of Captain Sharp, President, and Messrs. Wood (Colonial Treasurer) Johnston (Inspector of Mail Ships) Greaves (subCollector, Akaroa) and Robert Thompson and W. C. Daldy. Wellington is to be the Central seat of the Board. Presbyteiuan. — Several Presbyterian Ministers from the South and Napier are just now in Wellington, en routo for Auckland, per Claud Hamilton, to attend a Synod of the Free Church. Large and highly inteiesting meetings were held in the Free Church, Willis Street, on Tuesday and yesterday evenings, at which much interchange of friendly feeling took place, Wesleyan. — The Circuit meeting of the Wesleyans is now being held in Wellington, all parts of the circuit sending representatives. We suppose that advantage will be taken of the presence of so many new faces to hold a series of meetings as was done last year, very much to the good, not onlyofth.it demonstration, but of all the others. Cricket.— We learn that the devotees of this truly English game are preparing to return the visit which Auckland made two years ago. Many of our best players are working men, and to > meet the necessary expenses the contributions of those interested are .now being asked. Unless the appeal is liberally responded to, thevisit to Auck. land must be abandoned.
