ITALY.
Garibaldi has entered Catania on the east of Sicily, and is reported to have crossed over to Calabria at night. Sicily is placed under martial law, and the coasts blockaded. He anticipates wresting Rome from the French; his cry is " Rome or death !' Volunteers are swarming to Sicily by thousands to join him. Vessels laden with arms hover round the coast, and transports are collected. August 23. The Tuscan correspondent ot the Times ' states that Calabria is full of Garibaldians, in arms ; that the king's officials in that province are abandoning their posts, and that in Sicily a number of officers are throwing up their commissions rather than fight against Garibaldi— whilst private soldiers evince the same symptoms by open insubordination. Meanwhile the French army of occupation at Rome has been strongly reinforced, and King Victor Emmanuel has issued a
proclamation, declaring Garibaldi a rebel. This is the chief political topic in France, and the movement, it is said, the Emperor totally disapproves. The ' Moniteur ' has announced that the French Government, under present circumstances, is more than ever bound to defend the Pope. The National fete was held as usual on the 14th August. A revelation of the Emperor's policy expected, but none was made. 25.C00 additional troops to be despatched to Mexico to bring the campaign to a successful issue
