[A portion of the following was published in an extra to the Independent on Thursday last, . shortly after the arrival of the Wonga Wonga.] The s.s. Wonga Wonga arrived in Wellingtou 'harbor:' this .afternoon, She sailed from Dunedin at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, arrived at Lyttelton at 1 p.m. and from thence at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, and arrived here at 4 p.m. to-day. OTAGO. . ' We have dates from Otago to the 21sl inst The intelligence from the gold. fields is not- of any special importance. A correspondent of the Daily Times from the Nokomai sends us the following: — "The gold- . fields have taken a great change during the past week. All the diggers are making wages, aud many 9. to 11 dwts. per day, provisions are plentiful and cheap. The population now exceeds 1,000 ; and a number are doing capitally on the Moa Creek- and junction of the Nokomoi River. A party of four men took to the treasury ' fifty one ounces, the proceeds of four weeks work amongst 'five men, only four of whom were constantly at work. There are numerous cases of jumping going on. I anticipate a large gold-field here. .There is a small rush to Mr. Rees's station, and a reported rush to M'Nab's. The richest ground appears to be upon the bank and terraces along the Moa Creek. Some deep sinking is goiug on near tbe Mataura and tbe other side ofthe saddle." Ou Friday, 17th October, at the Supreme Court, Dunedin, sentence of death was passed od John Fratson, for the wilful murder of Andrew Wilson. Both Judge and prisoner were much affected on the occasion. „.
