Geology &c. of New Zealand. — Dr. Hoehstetter writes to a friend iv Melbourne — "Tbere are already published two volumes, containing the narrative of the voyage of the Novara, with numerous Woodcuts. These volumes, as well as the third, which is soon to follow the others and concludes the popular narrative, are from* the pen of Dr. Schorzer. Tbe results of scientific inquiry are to appear in from twelve to twenty large quarto volumes, with many t-bles, maps, charts, &c. ; but of them only one* volume, oo medical science, by Dr, Schwarz has already been published ; the other branches' of natural science are likewise rapidly advancing for tbe press. I, for my part," Dr. Hochstetter contiuues, "soon hope to complete the following tliree publications, viz.— -'Narrative of my Travels in New Zealand,' with many illustrations—a popular woik, published by Cotta at Stuttgart; 'New Zealand Atlas,* containing six or eight topographical and geological maps, (Dr. Perthes, Gotha) ; lastly, an exteusive work on the Geology of New Zealand,' which will appear as one volume of the scientific part of the Novara expedition. In all these publications rapid progress is made, and although my multifarious duties greatly interfere, I hope to be able to see the last-named work in print by the end of 1863 or commencement of 1864." The Maobi in a New Chabaoteb. — Just now some Maori actors are creating a furor in Sydney. We extract the following advertisemeat, critique, and letter from the Sydney 'Herald ' of 26th July :— J J ROYAL LYCEUM THEATRE — THE MAORI WARRIOR CHIEFS. ' A Great Success. The Greatest ever known in Sydney. Thoy will appear TO-DAY, at 2 o'clock, and THIS EVENING, at 7 o'clock, in the new drama called WHAKEAU, or THE PAKEHA MAORI. Introducing their sacred ceremonies, songs games, festivals, and ' THEIR GREAT WAR DANCE, Illustrated by authentic scenery, supported by the whole of the LYCEUM COMPANY. After which the glorious burlesque ONCE UPON A TIME THERE WERE TWO KINGS. In rehearsal, another uew drama, written expressly for the chiefs, called THE MAORI QUEEN. The Warrior Chiefs cannot perform in Sydney after Monday, the 4th. N.B.— DAY PERFORMANCE TO-DAY, at 2 o'clock. The chief event in the theatrical world (says the Herald) during tbe week now drawing toa close has been the almost unprecedented popularity of Mr. Whilworth's Mauri drama and its brilliant concomitant, the burlesque of tbe Two Kings. The drama was brought out, for the first time, on Saturday last, in the presence of a densely crowded audience, and was greeted tthroughout with loud manifestations of applause from all paits of the house. From the commencement to the finale, " Whakeau " proved to be an unmistakeable success, — the Maori chiefs, Qp; M'Gaurin, the principle members of the Lyceum company, and the author, being severally'called before tbe curtain, and complimented with cordial marks of approbation. The performances of the Maori warriors incidantally introduced into the play have been the subject of intense admiration and interest every evening since the production of the pieoe. Their wild but picturesque appearance, their sudden barbaric movements and gestures, not unmixed at times with a certain careless grace aod dignity — their songs, their national games, and their dances, are all such as to defy adequate description, and must be witnessed to be appreciated. The drama is enlivened by a considerable intermixture of comedy, but is not without a judicious proportion of action and language of a more elevated and serious description — calculated to develope the diamatic powers of the two leading characters in the hands of Miss Fanny Morgan and Mr. C. WVBarry.
