STEAM.
We congratulate our readers on the result of yesterday's proceedings in the Assembly, relative to Steam. The proposal to appropriate £30,000 for five years, towards establishing the Panama Line was sanctioned ; as was also
the whole of the resolutions of the select Committee, which recommended three main lines, from Australia — to Auckland, to Cook's Strait, to Otago— and the establishment of an inter provincial service by means of which all the principal provinces would be visited four times a month. An additional resolution was carried, on the motion of Mr. Moorhouse, limiting Contracts to a year, so as to give encouragement for the formation of a Colonial Steam Association — a plan for which had .been brought under his notice by some of our merchants during the last few days. We have good authority for s.iyin^ that the following contradiction by a contemporary is incorrect. What we stated on Tuesday and repeated on Thursday, is, notwithstanding the following from the last " Advertiser," perfectly correct. " We are in a position to state that it is not true, as asserted by the " Independent," that Mr. Wood has been offered £1200 a-yeiir by the present Ministry ."
