The Miners in the employment ojf the Mining Company at Newcastle, baying. recently gone on strike, a large number of extra hands have been procured from Melbourne.: The correspondent of the Sydney Herald at that place says : —
Yesterday it was currently reported that one of the vessels witb the miners from Melbourne was' off tlie port ; towards afternoon a barque was signalled, but could not get in, in consequence of the heavy sea running at the time. Tlih morning several sail were dicerned in tbe distance, and at one o'clock -a "barque, the Sydney, Griffiths, was towed in; the barque was too far off to make out if she was the long expected vessel. However, the town was quite alive with miners! who had 'collected in small groups iv the streets here %nd there, and on the wharves. The hill presented quite an auimated appearance. Between one and twoliundred people bad colleeted*there,*watching the vessel. Telescopes were inf. great requisition, and the result of observations ia some instances was quite amusing. On Nobby's upwards of fifty people had assembled to watch the vessel coming in, which proved to be the Mary E. Ray. .7 She was towed in by the Lowestoft tug, arid anchored about halfpast four in the afternoon. ' There could not have been less than from '200 to'' '3oo assembled on the different whkrves,^4tdhing the vessel goitig up the harbour..; T§'l*men couUl be distinctly seen clustered" dii' the forecastle, leaning over the side. Scarcely had the vessel anchored before several boats; pushed off from the shore laden with passengers* eager to to obtain a view of the new .arrivals. Iv one of the boats were this miners' delegates, who had held a conversation with, those r on s board (ua.one, was, allowed . to, go /oh ( boardrfv The result was tbe men agreed to meet 'the ,r_iners at the Co-operative Store immediately after landiug.
