THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY.

We do' not care to say more on tlm subject than we have snid, but are obliged to do so nevertheless. We believe that the General Assem bly will meet in Wellington, and gave a week since the grounds on which that belief was formed. The Advertiser says L the Governor is not justified in leaving the North, and the Southern Cross of ihe ■ 2oth February tells us that " rumour } says the General Assembly is to bo v held after all, at the seat of government." How much the "facts "of the 1 Southern Cross are worth, our readers * have already had an opportunity of judg- * ing in reference to the powder hoax, and _ perhaps they will not, therefore, bo inclined ft to estimate its ' rumours " at a very high * figure. We need merely call attention to the extract from the Auckland Provincial - Council debates in our Friday's issue > On the 21st February it was deemed certain by the members that the Assembly was coming here, and - nothing happened within the next few J days to give a colouring to the " rumour" . alluded to. It was a nice little peg to hang 3 an article upon, and that is the secret

of the whole matter. Whether the As- | senibly will or will not moet here, must rest on circumstances which no one can foresee ; and although we may presume that a certain class will try to. prevent its removal to Wellington, yet we know that there is every disposition on the part of the Government and a largo class in Auckland to deal justly, and fulfil tho pledge, over and over again made by their predecessors, to hold a session here. On the Bth instant, a fortnight later than the Southern Cross rumour, the New Zealander says : — Gkneral Assembly Meeting. — It is generally believed that the next session ot the General Assembly will beheld in June; the place of meeting, if it be determined on, has not been announced. There exists a very general disposition amongst members that for once at least a session should take place at Wellington, and notwithstanding the expense and inconvenience of removing the records arid establishment of the Government from one Province to another, — inconvenience and expense the extent of which can only be realised by experience, — all parties concerned seemed disposed to acquiesce. For our own part however, we do not see how the Governor, superintending as he must in person the delicate and important operation of establishing the. new institutions amongst the Natives and watching the disturbers in Waikato, can be absent with safety from Auckland. It may be that considerations of this nature must determine the question for this session as betweeu Wellington and Auckland. The satisfactory progress whiuh tbe native negociations are making, lead to the expectation that the decision, which we said last Friday we were told the ministry had arrived at, viz., to hold the next session at Wellington, will not be frustrated. As we are thoroughly sensible that j there is a bona fide disposition to meet in Wellington, alike ou the part of tbe Government and on that of the large ! majority of members, we are satisfied that the contrary will only take place ou an unforeseen necessity arising, the nature of which will be so clear that there cannot be two opinions respecting it.
