P^lE#"^E^pND STUD BOOK. AS it is proposed to publish, early next year, a STUD BOOK for New Zealand, persona possessed of thoroughbred horses, who wish to have their stock recorded in the pages of the work in question, are requested to furnish the undersigned, as soon as possible, with the fullest particulars they possess of the breeding of their hotses. The preat and increasing interest shown in all the provinces in the breeding of thorungh-bred horse stock, renders a work of the above character highly desinible, as, without it, in n few years the pedigrees of many valuable animals will be altogether lost, so that it will be impossible at any fuiuve time to certify to the blood of their descen- [ dants. From the circumstance that, until quite recently, no Stud Book was ever published in New South Wales, to winch colony New Zealand is so largely indebted for its horse stock, it has already become difficult to trace the pedigrees of many of our supposed thorough-bred horses to the English Stud Book, the only recognised authority of the horses purity of breed. Much, however, may be done by research and inquiry to clear up doubtfu pedigrees if the. task is at once undertaken, but the longer the work is deferred the greater will be the difficulty of ultimate success. The following is given as specimens of the form in which the Editor of the work wishes information to be furnished him, or as nearly so as circumstances will permit : — (1). REGALIA, bay mare, bred by *Mr. Icely, of New South Wales, and imported to Nelson by Mr. Redwood, in 1853; got by St. John (E.T.8.), out of Rakish Kit, by Emigrant t (E.T.8.), gdam Spaewife (E.T.8.) | 1853, b c InVerman, by Sir Hercules') I&D4, missed to Sir Hercules I.- n „ j 1855, r f Emerald, by Lamplighter f Mr * ° /flUtle y 1856, missed to Sir Hercules j 18&7, b n Royalty, by Chevalier 1 1858, missed to II Barbiere 1859, b c Rcgmirn, by St. Aubin - Mi: Elliott. 18G0, missed to Potentate 1861, hf t by Towton J (2). Hawke, got by Melbourne, dam Cinizelli, by Tonchstone, g dam Brocade, by Pantaloon. Melbourne by Humphrey Clinker. Imported to New Zealand in 1858. The intials, E.T.8., signify English thoroughbred, and, where used, show that the horse to which they apply was bred in England, and may be found in the English Siud Book. As a New Zealand Stud Book will be a work of great value to all breeders of thoroughbred horses iii the colony, and will, hereafter, be a standard book of reference, it is hoped that persons having thoroughbred stock, or what are supposed to be so, will lose no time in furnishing the Editor with the fullest information they possess respecting them. Where pedigrees of colonial-bred horses are defec. tive, the Editor will endeavour, >hen practicable, to render them perfect. The New Zealand Stud Book will be uniform in size and style with the English Stud Book, and contain in addition to those of our own colonial horses, the pedigrees, rb far as they can be precured, of all thoroughbred stallions and mares imported into Australia, from which so lare a portion of our town stock are descended ; and to render reference to the English Stud Book, which is not always at hand, as little necessary as possible, pedigrees will be carried back to well-known sires nnd dams of English horses, so rs to show the particular strains of blood our horses possess. The price ef'the work to Subscribers will be £1 Is., to non-Subscricers, j£l 11s. 6d. Subscribers are_ requested to send in their names, so that they may be priuted with the work. C.
