CHAMPIONSHIP RESULTS COWERN’S GOOD STABLEFORD NEXT SATURDAY’S •MATCHES Last Saturday the Waihi Golf Club’s championship events were advanced a further stage, the senior division having now reached the finals while the intermediates and juniors have progressed to the semifinals.
The finalists in the senior championship ace C. E. Hollis and A. J. Dean. While Hollis won with something in hand, his game with A R. Cleary was always interesting. One or two mistakes proved costly to Cleary, otherwise he may have gone closer to defeating the title-holder. A. J. Dean had rather the better of the luck in his match with J. Barron. After Dean had gene into an early lead of three up, Parron produced some steady golf
to be all square at the turn. Fortunes fluctuated over the second nine holes and a half on the eighteenth left the game still undecided. Barron had a good chance tc win on the nineteenth whenDean laid him a stymie to secure the half. Yet another stymie by Doan at the twentieth was too much for Barron and Dean won a very close match.
Results of matches played were: Senior Championship.—C. E. Hollis beat A. R. Cleary, 3 and 2; A. J. Dean beat J. Barron at the twentieth.
Intermediate Championship.—E. C Dunstan beat G. C. Wigg at the twentieth; D. Seath beat B. Carnachan, 2 up; C. N. Duthie beat W. Rapson, 1 up; 0. J. Morgan beat J. Mannix, 3 and 1. Junior Championship.—R. D. Taylor beat E. J. Scoble, 4 and 3; F. J. Spiers beat R. Ellery, 1 up; A. F. Lowrie beat N. F. Morton, 6 and 4; R. W. King beat W. R. Steel, 2 and 1.
Senior Plate. —M. F. Haszard beat A. W. H. Clark, 6 and 3; W. Wotherspoon beat H .A. Haszard, 6 and 5; R. M. Cowern beat W. E. Ludwig, 7 and 6; D. J. Merrington beat H. F. Malyon, 1 up. Intermediate Plate: R. Quinlan beat R. B. Murray, 5 and 4; R. M. Cullen beat J. D. Timanus, 3 and 1; W. G. Henderson beat E. Farrell at (be 19th; H. E. Rowe beat F. L. Franklin, 1 up; D. Haszard beat N. H. Rickman, 1 up; F. E. Hunt beat J. Jesney 2 and 1; R. A. Dibble beat W. Meiklejohn, 6 and' 5. Junior Plate. —R. Blackwood beat A. Er McHardy, 1 up.
A Stableford bogey match played in conjunction resulted in a win for R. M. Cowern with the excellent score of 40 points. Cowern played a gross 73, six strokes below his handicap. This good effort earned him a handicap reduction to the eight mark. W. Hollis and R. A. Dibble also returned very good scores with 37 points and 36 points respectively. Both players reduced their handicaps by one stroke. W. G. Pennell, 34, and A. R. Gleary, 34, also scored well. Next Saturday’s Matches Next Saturday, August 20, the seventh round (medal) of the club cup competition will be played. The quarter-finals of the four ball, best ball competition and matches in ether events will also be played. Players not drawn for these events may choose partners for the cup medal event. Four Ball Draw: Wotherspoon and Merrington v. Dillimore and Seath, Dean and Cowern v. Ellery and Pennell, Haszard and Barron v. Franklin and Wright, A. W. Clark and R. Taylor v. Mannlx and A. Taylor.
Intermediate Championship: C. N. Duthie v. 0. J. Morgan. Junior Championship: A. F. Lowrie v. R. W. King. Intermediate Plate: R. M. Cullen v. W. G. Henderson, D. Haszard v. R Quinlan, F. E. Hunt v. ft. A. Dibble.
The committeemen in charge for the day will be Messrs W. E. wig and J. Jesney.
