MATTERS BEFORE COUNCIL The monthly fleeting of the Waihi Borough Council was held on Wednesday evening, the Mayor, Mr W. M. Wallnutt, presiding. There were also present: The deputy-Mayor, Mr S. M. Hovell, and Crs. J. G. Cornes, R. J. Caundle, T. A. €. MacDonald, S. ‘Bonnici and K. M. Wrigley. The town clerk, Mr F. M. Murray, the engineer, Mr F. G. Bourke, the gasworks manager, Mr F. C. Edwards, and the inspector, Mr J, Spence, were in attendance. Closer Relations With Russia

Application for permission to hold a street stall on a Friday after the present patriotic appeal is finished was made by the Waihi branch of the Society for Closer Relations with Russia, in a letter from the hon. secretary, Mr J. C. Higgens. On the motion of the Mayor, who was seconded by Cr, K. M. Wrigley, it was agreed to accede to the request. Ladies’ Rest Room ' Commendation on the improvements that had already been made to the sanitary arrangements at the ladies’ rest-room in .Haszard Street was contained in a letter from the Waihi branch of the League of Mothers. The communication suggested certain further improvements. The letter was received and it was decided to inform the league what steps were at present being taken. Auckland Sailors’ Home Stating that it had a record of 57 years’ of service to sea-faring men, the Auckland Sailors’ Home wrote asking for a donation, and on the motion of Ci\ ißonnici it was decided to make a grant of £l. Expressions of thanks were contained in letters from the Workers’ Educational Association, for a grant of £2 2s; and from the Nursing Division of the Waihi branch of the St. John Ambulance Brigade, for having installed gas •in the division’s new rooms in Haszard Street. Gas made at the municipal works during August and September totalled 2,150,000 cubic feet, compared with 2,103,400 cubic feet during the corresponding period last year, an increase of 46,600 cubic feet, while gas sold amounted to 1,471,200 feet, a decrease of 100,600 feet, stated the gasworks manager in his report. “The decrease shown is due to the alteration in the date for reading the ordinary meters, one month of ordinary meters, which would approximately be 450,000 cubic feet, not being included in the above figures,” stated Mr Edwards. “For the first six months this year there. has been a decrease of 19,100 cubic feet in the amount of gas made and an increase of 36,300 cubic feet in gas sold. During the two months’ we have sold five cookers, five waterheaters, one califont, one hot-plate and three copper rings. The usual maintenance work has been carried out and the plant at the works is working satisfactorily.” The report was adopted. Works Committee Report

Recommendations by the Works Committee in its report included the following: That the engineer be authorised to submit estimates to the Public Works Department for the work entitled in setting apart part of the cemetery for soldiers’ burials, and that he be authorised to carry out the work; that the engineer 'be instructed to bring down plans and specifications with the estimated cost of providing modern sanitary arrangements for the rest room and the municipal buildings; and, that, the deputy-Mayor reported that Cr. Bonnici had offered part of his property for widening the road running between Seddon Street and Kenny Street adjoining his property, the committee recommends that Cr. Bonnici be thanked for his offer and that the town clerk be instructed to look into the legal aspect of the* matter. The report was adopted. Inspector and Poundkeeper Reporting for the period ended October 12, the inspector stated that he had destroyed nine dogs and had served notices to cut hedges on five residents, while others had been asked to burn clippings left on roads. To date, 461 traffic licenses had 'been issued, while during the month 29 licenses had been renewed and nine tests given.

The pound-keeper, Mr E. Spalding, reported that during the month he had impounded two cows, one heifer and one horse. Both reports were adopted.
