VALUABLE SERVICE

ST. JOHN BRIGADE WORK

HELP FREELY GIVEN ANNUAL APPEAL AT WEEK-END Next Friday afternoon, October 23, at the mine and on Saturday morning in the town (so that the Patriotic stall on Friday will not be interfered with), St. John Ambulance will be holding its annual collection, and the generous support of Waihi citizens is solicited. The work of the St. John 'Brigade needs no explanation, for in every town in New Zealand and in almost every country in the British Empire, there is a branch of this organisation whose motto is “For the Service of Mankind.” The work is entirely voluntary and many hours are spent by members attending classes to train them for their work. Again this year many letters and messages of appreciation have been received by the Waihi Division from grateful patients who have been helped. Patients are transported to hospital at any hour of the day or night, all gatherings of the public are attended and homes where sickness has attacked the family are visited, while many accident cases are attended. Voluntary aids are also trained for hospital emergency and first-aid personnel for E.P.S. duties. The Beach casualty station is maintained by the Waihi Division and all moneys collected are used for equipment, medical supplies, first-aid outfits where necessary and to maintain the division. No money collected leaves Waihi and the St. John Brigade does not aim at a large sum in the bank, but only to raise sufficient to maintain its efficiency and to be ready to serve the public when required. The St. John organisation has conducted stalls for the Patriotic fund and has been generously supported. It now asks for the same good support for their own funds. Workers at the mine who receive tags on Friday are asked to wear them on Saturday morning to avoid duplication of collecting.
