ACADEMY THEATRE

CURRENT PROGRAMMES As the girl who knew all the answers, beautiful Joan Bennett comes to the Academy Theatre screen with Franchot Tone in Columbia’s newest love-and-laugh farce, “She Knew All the Answers,” which is showking to-night. Proving that Wall Street may know its stocks and blondes but a brunette like Joan Bennett is something else again, the hectic new hit was directed by Richard Wallace from a story by June Allen. John Hubbard, Eve Arden and William Tracy are important members of the supporting cast. Miss Bennett appears as a night club permormer who literally and figuratively, goes to work on Wall Street. Mr Tone is seen as the all-work and no-play-boy whose office is disrupted, whose conservative aplomb and impressive stock manipulation are completely smashed by the bewildering antics of the beautiful brunette. In “She Knew All the Answers,” too, Tone provides an engaging and delightful characterisation* as he slowly, inevitably, and hilariously moves from stiff-necked austerity to unconventional romance. Hubbard appears as the playboy responsible for it all; Miss Arden is seen as Joan’s “wisecracking” room-mate, and young Tracy, in what is his finest performance to date, is seen as the office boy who regards the new switchboard operator with unconcealed affection. Flaming planes mysteriously crash. Espionage and sabotage run riot on a little island in the Pacific, engaged in modernising its fortifications. For fifth columnists include high-ranking Air Corps officials and native desperadoes who use every means to see that the defence programme is defeated. This is the thrilling background of Paramount’s sky drama, “Forced Landing,” which will be shown at the Academy Theatre tomorrow. In addition to Richard Arlen and Eva Gabor, the players include J. Carrol Naish, Nils Asther, Evelyn Brent, John Miljan and Victor Varconi.

The colourful story of the Younger brothers in their daring escapades throughout America’s Old West is vividly told in the Warner Bros.’ exciting film successor to that studio’s “Dodge City” and “Santa Fc Trail,” “'Bad Men of Missouri,” which will also be shown to-morrow. The Younger brothers were one of the toughest trio of bandits in America’s turbulent ■ history. They robbed banks, trains and stage coaches with a daring that was unbelievable, taking the law into their own hands to avenge the wrongs done their neighbours by an avaricious power-grasp-ing banker. *-No pictures will be screened at the Miners’ Theatre this week-end.
