DISTRICT QUOTA
ALL-PURPOSES APPEAL SUM OF £1044 NEEDED PATRIOTIC COMMITTEE MEETS - ' (Progress in connection with the raising of the Waitii and district quota of £3360 in' the All-Purposes Appeal was reported on at a meeting of the general committee of the Waihi Patriotic Committee on Monday evening. The Mayor, M r W. M. Wallnutt, presided over a good attendance, and the meeting was characterised by a spirit of harmony and anxiety, now that certain misunderstandings regarding a grant to the provincial secretary have been removed, to get on with the job of making up the quota. Report by Secretary
The hon. secretary, Mr S. H. Brown, reported that of the £3360 that had been needed, £2315 6s 10d was now in hand, leaving a balance of £1044 13s 2d to be obtained before the end of the present year. To do this, said Mr Brown, it would be necessary to raise something more than £3OO a month until the campaign closed on December 31. Nevertheless, with revenue from street stalls, and if everybody put their shoulders to the wheel, he was confident that the amount could be raised. Mention was also made of the sports to be held on the Recreation Ground on Labour Day to help swell the funds, and it was stated that arrangements were progressing satisfactorily, and indications were that the event would prove a distinct success from every point of view. Among the novel attractions would be the preparation of a Maori haangi, or oven by local natives. The Taxation Remit Referring to the remit from the Waihi committee to the Auckland Provincial Patriotic Council, that patriotic funds should be raised by means of direct taxation, which was considered the most equitable method of sharing the burden, Mr Wallnutt said that he had moved the remit at the last meeting of the Auckland Council, and had found a seconder in the Mayor of Thames, Mr S. Ensor. The acting-chairman, Mr I. J. Goldstine, had pointed out, however, that the matter had already been dealt with and rejected at two conferences of patriotic councils held in Wellington. Voices: Keep at it; keep at it. The subject was not discussed further.
