"Religion and the Totalitaria State" will be the subject of Cano Kayll's address on Sunday evening.

A dance will be held in the Waimata Hall on Wednesday evening next under the auspices of the Young Farmers' Club. Supper will be provided and free cars will leave, the post office at 7.30.

Advice has been received from Trinity College of Music, London, that the "special merit" certificate of the college has been awarded to Marion Elizabeth Jones, of Waikino who has completed the requirements in the practical division from "iirst steps" to "higher local" at the age of fourteen.

Sergeant T. Kelly, who has been in Hamilton since May, 1935, has been transferred to Pukekohe to take the piace of Sergeant J. T. Cowan, who is retiring. Sergeant M. J. Farrell, of Wellington, who has been temporarily stationed at Hamilton for some j'Onths, will remain in Hamilton pernanently.

Thefts from motor-veuicles at Katikali on the night of Thursday, November 17, resulted in the appearance of two young married men. Richard Robert Gardiner (28) and Thomas Rowan (24) in the Waihi Magistrate's Court on Thursday Appearing in (lie morning before Messrs I'. fi. Brady and A. J. A special meeting of the Waihi Borough Council was held yesterday afternoon to consider proposals relative to the Willows road bridge, following an inspection of the structure by the Works Committee and a conference with representatives of the Ohinemuri County Council. It was decided to agree to the proposal of the.latter that the Borough Council find the material for the building of a concrete groin, the county to do the work.

Members of the Waihi Defence Rifle Club fired their usual week-end competition over the 200 yan'.s range last Saturday, the wind being too strong to fire over the longer ranges. Mr W. Holdsworth's trophy was won by Vice-President E. Swinwells with 100 points, Rifleman E. J. Walford being the runner-up with 98. Scores were as follows: Riflemen E. Swindells, 100; E. J. Walford, 9S; D. Seath (scr.), 07; P. Finnell, 90: T. Cornes, 96; W. Feather (scr.), 95; J. G. Cornes, 94; J. Coleman, 93; A. Seath (or.), 91 and B. Hoyle, 79. The shooting this afternoon will be over the 5 0 oyds range (double shoot).

A residence in Waihi of -IS years is the record of Mr P. Garvey, and this was broken this week by the departure of Mr Garvey, who, accompanied by Mrs Garvey, left yesterday to take up their residence at No. 1, King George Avenue, Epsom, Auckland. Mr Garvey, soon after his arrival in Waihi in 1890, entered the employ of the Waihi Gold Mining Company, his first job being in the company's blacksmith's shop. He continued in the service of the company for over 4 0 years, retiring about six years ago. Mr Garvey, known to his friends as "Paddy," was virtually the pioneer of the Rugby code in Waihi, and his reputation on the football field was an enviable one up to his retirement many years ago. As a mark of the esteem in which he was held by old Rugbyites and others who followed, he was tendered a farewell social function in St. Joseph's Hall on Thursday evening, presided over by Mr J. J. Callaghan. During the evening the guest was the : recipient of a travelling rug, the presentation being made on behalf of his friends by the Mayor, Mr W. M. Wallnutt. A gift of a silver sugar bowl was also made to Mrs Garvey A full report of the proceedings will appear in our next issue.
